Biology Field Trips with the Irish Wildlife Trust

All field trips run on a half day basis (3 to 4 hours) and cost €14 per student with a minimum class size of 10 students. The field trips are run by IWT staff with Degrees in natural sciences and practical experience in conservation biology.

The site for field trips is chosen to suit your school location. We can use suitable school grounds, local parks or local nature reserves – whichever best suits your group's needs. The IWT is fully insured for outdoor events.

Students will need to bring outdoor clothes, comfortable footwear and a pencil. All other equipment will be provided along with a field trip resource pack and curriculum linked workbook.

IWT Secondary SchoolsLeaving Certificate – Ecosystem Field Trip

Curriculum Link: UNIT ONE: BIOLOGY - THE STUDY OF LIFE, Sub-unit 1.5 A study of an ecosystem

Visit a grassland or woodland ecosystem near you to carry out a real ecosystem study field trip. Your group will join an IWT scientist in a practical investigation of an ecosystem using simple yet informative ecological techniques and smart devices to aid in mapping and data recording. The field trip will include;

  • Species sampling using collecting apparatus such as pitfall traps, sweep nets and pooters

  • Species identification using simple keys

  • A quantitative study of the plants and animals present (using the quadrate method)

  • A practical investigation of the abiotic factors present in the ecosystem and how they affect species choice of habitat. This will then be discussed in the context of broader Irish abiotic factors and wildlife habitat

  • Examination of a number of plants and animals adaptations to the study ecosystem

  • Completing our tailor made food chain, food web charts

  • Recording all data in tailor made field notebooks for easy reporting

  • Learn how to make a species record and submit it to online to species databases

Transition Year - Practical Biology Fun Field Trip

Your TY Class will join one of our IWT’s scientists on a fun field trip learning how to identify various species of Irish plant and animal and how to read mammal tracks and signs. Students will get a close look at the organisms found in the chosen habitat as we will use biological recording equipment such as pitfall traps, sweep nets and pooters to examine groups such as bees, butterflies, native trees and ground dwelling invertebrates. Students will learn how to use a smart device to map and record their finding. This field trip is designed to introduce concepts from the leaving cert biology curriculum to the class in a fun and practical manner. Concepts covered include;

  • Species identification using simple keys

  • Species collection using collecting apparatus such as pitfall traps, sweep nets and pooters

  • Animal and plant adaptation to environmental factors

  • Habitat mapping using GPS technology

Junior Certificate – Local Habitat Field Trip

Your Junior Cert Science class will join an IWT scientist on a field trip to a local habitat to learn all about the world of plants and animals Using real biology techniques and equipment, students will investigate the habitat, record their results and learn how to communicate them. The field trip will include;

  • Observation of the organisms present and practising how to classify them

  • The use of a simple key to identify plant and animal species

  • Identification of the main parts of a flowering plant using multiple examples including native trees

  • Collecting animal’s for identification using pitfall traps and sweep nets

  • Identification of the parts of a flowers structure

  • Sampling the habitat’s biodiversity using a quadrate throwing exercise

  • Investigation of the effects of the environment on living things

  • Identification of producers, decomposers and consumers within the study habitat

  • Exploration of the importance of conservation with our scientists drawing on their real life experience of conservation

  • Discussion of how human activity can affect the environment
