The Irish Wildlife Trust is a proud founding partner in the Fair Seas campaign. Our aim is to see Ireland become a world leader in marine protection, giving our species, habitats and coastal communities the opportunity to thrive. Key to this is the creation of a network of ecologically coherent Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). For decades, successive governments committed to having a representative network of MPAs. Unfortunately, we are still waiting. Ireland’s marine wildlife and ecosystems are under increasing pressure. Enough is enough. This May, we are asking you to support the call to protect our seas. Here are three key actions you can take to take action for marine life:

One: On 21 May at 1pm, we will hold a Rally For Ireland’s Seas outside Leinster House. This is a chance for our community to come together in person and take action. We’re demanding the urgent publication of long-promised MPA legislation, and real progress on the effective designation and management of protected areas at sea. Come along and make some noise!
Two: Fair Seas launched an online tool that will allow you to write directly to Taoiseach Mícheál Martin and relevant ministers to tell them enough is enough. The seas around Ireland, and the communities that rely on them, can wait no longer. New MPA legislation must be prioritised and progressed urgently.
Three: Join the gathering at the Fair Seas World Ocean Week Conference. Leading scientists, community leaders and advocates will showcase best practice and strong case studies of successful ocean management. Our Marine Advocacy Officer, Grace Carr, is among the speakers. Places are filling up but there are still a few spots available.
