PRESS RELEASE: IWT welcomes news that burning of uplands will not be extended into March this year

28 February 2019

The IWT has welcomed the announcement from Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Josepha Madigan, that burning of uplands will not be permitted into March of this year.

IWT campaigns officer Pádraic Fogarty says: “This is a welcome reprieve for our wildlife and we welcome the minister’s timely condemnation of wild fires which have engulfed many parts of the country in recent days.”

The IWT believes that burning of uplands and land on peat soil should never be permitted. We urge government departments, especially those of Minister Madigan and Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed, to develop a new plan for upland and hill areas which would allow both people and nature to thrive.
