The Irish Wildlife Trust welcomes the appointment of Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin as chair of the forthcoming Citizens’ Assembly on Biodiversity Loss. This is a vitally important process which we hope will engage the people of Ireland with the devastating loss of nature which has occurred.

The commitment to hold a Citizens’ Assembly on biodiversity loss was first made in May 2019 when the Dáil declared a climate and biodiversity emergency. Biodiversity is our life support system and restoring its health is essential for the development of healthy communities.

The Citizens’ Assembly affords us an opportunity to reflect at a national level on why we find ourselves with such a poor quality natural environment while also promoting the solutions that can bring people and nature together.

Dr Ní Shúilleabháin we believe is more than qualified to lead in this task and we wish her every success in the months ahead.
